OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 Sport Extended Diploma – Triple award

Course highlight: National Pool Lifeguard Qualification will be delivered to our triple students if they wish at a heavily discounted rate. We will teach you how to be a coach and you get to develop your skills as a coach. In addition to this you will have a work experience organised for you at Ferndown Leisure Centre as part of the course.

Students enjoy planning a middle school sport festival and assisting with the running and leadership of our school sports day as well as completing a first aid course.

A grade 4 in GCSE PE or Health & Fitness

A grade 5 in Science subjects would also be considered if GCSE PE/Health & Fitness is not taken.

Why study Sport at A level?

The OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 Sport Extended Diploma is the equivalent to three A Levels. In recent years the PE department have produced outstanding results consistently being in the top 1% Nationally for Post 16 Sport qualifications. This course has lots of variety with practical units as well as sports science and exam units. There are 17 units (9 mandatory sports coaching pathway units, two optional units). The focus of the course is to enhance students’ employability, so all units are directly relevant to real-life work situations. The Units studied include:

Unit 8 Organisation of Sports events

Unit 10 Biomechanics & movement analysis (triple only)

Unit 11 Physical Activity for Specific Groups

Unit 12 Nutrition  and diet for sport (triple only)

Unit 13 Health and Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

Unit 14 Working in active leisure (triple only)

Unit 17 Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation

All units are marked individually

as either a Pass, Merit or Distinction and all have UCAS points attached to them for entry to university (Distinction* =240 points to Pass = 80 points).

Students will learn through a range of different strategies including practical lessons, independent study, group work and class discussions.

All the units are listed above, but the course provides content that matches some aspect of Biology and Sports Science, along with practical activities such as developing coaching skills and planning fun sports events.

The students will participate in an Outdoor activity either at Rockley Park or Moors Valley, complete a First Aid course, lead middle school sports festivals and learn about how the skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems adapt during exercise.

What skills will the students develop during the 2 years?

Communication skills, leadership, analysis of performance, critical thinking and using scientific concepts and applying them to practical situations.

Students studying this subject here will:
