Why study Media Studies at A Level?
This course is for anyone who is fascinated by the way the Media industry works. From initial idea to production and then reception the media world has the ability to shape the way we think as well as provide welcome entertainment.
In media studies we ask questions regarding a producer’s intent and how audiences respond. In a growing world we also begin to wonder if the media still influences the audience or if the audience has begun to influence the media.
As part of the course students will take part in workshops at local universities and have the opportunity to hear from in industry experts.
Course Overview
We study a wide range of interesting and influential media theorists and apply our newfound theory and terminology knowledge to set texts chosen by the exam board. These texts include examples form historical and contemporary media and are within all aspects of Media forms including:
- Radio
- Magazines
- Video Games
- Online and social media
- Music Videos
- Newspapers
- Advertising
Students studying Media A Level will:
- Have a chance to create their own media products in their non exam assessment.
- Explore issues in how meaning is created and interpreted through Media.
- Analyse the media world and why media is created.
- Consider media producers intentions and how audiences respond.
- Develop communication skills through group projects in media production.
- All students will have the opportunity to be part of the FUS Marketing team to develop their skills for future careers.
Progression routes and future careers:
Media Studies A Level prepares students for a wide range of future careers and is a welcome qualification for university courses. Careers include marketing and advertising, all areas of media production including film, television and radio, journalism, animation and visual effects.
Facilities:
Media lessons take place in IT suites with PCs that all have advanced software from the Adobe Suite. Additionally, as an A level student you are able to use DSLR cameras, microphones and other equipment you may need such as backdrops, tripods and lighting. These can be borrowed by students from the media department and used off and on site as you wish when creating your own media productions as part of your coursework. This freedom allows students to perfect their technique as well as produce content for their future steps in terms of show reels or portfolios.
