Geography A Level

Course Highlights:
Overall there are four days of fieldwork built into the course.
Highlights include the chance to examine, first hand, coastal environments in Dorset & diverse communities in East London.
Students also get to focus on an area of geography they are passionate about for their independent investigation.

Other subjects that work well with this course are:
Maths Statistics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, English Language and Travel and Tourism.

Why study Geography at A Level?
It has been stated that Geography is the subject that holds the key to the future and with the current political focus on environmental management and sustainability it has never been more relevant. Geography is the study of a changing and interconnected world. There are many themes within this subject and because of this, it is a varied and highly exciting field of study. Geography acts as a bridge between the Humanities and Science subjects equipping students with highly desirable transferable skills. It tackles global issues and allows people to develop a greater understanding of the world around them.

Course overview

  • Students will learn through; group work, fieldwork, media analysis, ICT & GIS, independent research, decision making and discussion.
  • Students study a broad range of topics from the threats posed by tectonic hazards through to the impact of migration on host communities.
  • Students will develop their verbal and written communication skills, statistical analysis as well as report and essay writing all crucial for success at an undergraduate level.

Students studying Geography will:

  • Get a chance to learn more about some of the world’s most important issues.
  • Explore issues in the management of physical environments and humanitarian crises.
  • Investigate different aspects of global politics relating to globalisation contested borders and sovereignty.
  • Apply knowledge to current events in the real world such as the European refugee crisis.

Progression routes and future careers

  • Transferable skills – A Geographer will develop numeracy, literacy, communication, graphical and investigative skills.
  • Possible careers – Geographers work in an array of industry sectors, including; Information Services, Business & Finance, Services, Environmental Management, Administration and Education.
  • Geography is highly valued by Universities with many A Level geographers gaining places on degree courses such as Law, Economics and Geology.
